Types of Art mediums
There are many different types of art mediums that have been used throughout history. Each one has its own history of development and use around the world. Some art mediums are more traditional, while others have been developed only recently as technology changes.
Some of the traditional art mediums are as follows:
Pencil, ink, and chalk for drawing Oil, acrylic and watercolor for painting.
Drawing
Drawing is one of the oldest artistic forms. It remains popular today in virtually every society. Mediums that can be used for drawing include:
Pencil: Pencils, usually made of graphite, have been in existence in their modern form since 1795. They have the advantage of allowing artists to erase work in case of errors and are used almost ubiquitously around the world today for all kinds of drawings. Ink: Pens and other ink-based drawing tools have existed in some form or another for at least five thousand years, dating back to ancient Egypt. Art can be made with many different kinds of pens, including ballpoint pens, gel pens, calligraphy pens, markers, highlighters, and more. Chalk: There is evidence that chalk has been used as an art medium since the earliest cave paintings, making it potentially the oldest art medium used by humans. Chalk is a highly versatile drawing medium that can be used on many surfaces. Crayon: Crayons are often associated with children, but some serious adult artists have also used crayon to great effect in their drawings. Crayons are made of wax dyed with color pigment. Pastel: Pastels are thin sticks of pigment that provide a non-greasy, malleable color. They have been in use since at least the 16th century and are popular for creating impressionistic artwork. They are also commonly used in life drawing.
Paintings
Painting is another extremely old style that dates back to some of the earliest known works of art. There are many ways of creating effective pigments, including:
Oil: Oil paints have existed since at least the 7th century CE. Today they are typically made of color pigments mixed with linseed oil that dry upon exposure to air. Many of the most famous works of art in the Western art canon have been created using oil paints. Watercolor: Watercolor paints were first created around the 1400s. Dyes and solubility changed over time. Watercolor paints are created by mixing cakes of paint with water to give an ethereal quality to a painting. Acrylic: Acrylic paint is much newer than the paint types listed above. It only gained popularity in the 20th century. It is considered more versatile than either oil or watercolor paint, giving artists increased flexibility.
